The portfolio includes collaborations with some of the nation’s most recognisable brands such as Costa Coffee, Kellogg’s, Marmite, and Only Fools and Horses, alongside the creation of successful in-house brands including La Cucina, Smokin’ Canyon, and Backyard BBQ.
As a business that develops and delivers millions of gift sets annually, Kimm & Miller recognises the environmental responsibilities that come with scale - and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
Sustainability Commitment and Supply Chain Engagement
Kimm & Miller is committed to embedding sustainability into every stage of its operations. Operating across diverse product categories and in partnership with multiple manufacturers, licensors, and retailers, the company recognises the complexity of its supply chain and the importance of a collaborative, transparent approach to environmental responsibility.
Carbon Accounting and Emissions
Kimm & Miller has been onboarded onto the Smart Carbon platform to calculate carbon emissions and identify key contributors across its operations and supply chain. An emissions baseline year of 2019 and an emissions year of 2022 have been reported, and the company will continue to report annually.
Scope 1, 2, and 3 data have been collected, and efforts are ongoing to improve reporting methods for greater accuracy. Between 2019 and 2020, Kimm & Miller achieved reductions of 634,371 KgCO₂e. With 98.9% of emissions falling within Scope 3, the company is actively engaging with its supply chain to improve factory-level reporting and reduce emissions. Kimm & Miller also collaborates with local logistics providers that have demonstrated strong commitments to sustainable haulage.
Training and Technical Expertise
Members of Kimm & Miller’s technical team have undertaken formal sustainability training to support the company’s Net Zero strategy. Completed courses include:
▪️ Introduction to Carbon Footprinting (GHG Accounting), Carbon Management and Carbon Reporting
▪️ Climate Change: Risk, Opportunity and Business Resilience
▪️ Advanced Carbon Footprinting (GHG Accounting), Carbon Management and Carbon Reporting
In addition, the team is currently undertaking a Diploma in Business Sustainability from the Institute of Sustainability Studies.
Employee engagement plays a vital role in implementing greener initiatives across the Bedford office and throughout the wider supply chain. Kimm & Miller continues to work with Smart Carbon to set sustainability targets, improve emissions reporting, and drive reductions. The company currently holds Level 1 accreditation and is actively working toward higher levels of certification.
Scope 1 Operations: Energy and Transport
As part of its Scope 1 emissions reduction efforts, Kimm & Miller has significantly improved its direct energy and transport footprint. Since May 2020, the Bedford office has operated on a 100% renewable energy tariff provided by E.ON Next, ensuring all electricity and gas are sourced from renewables.
The company fleet also now consists entirely of low-emission vehicles. As of August 2023, this includes three fully electric vehicles and two hybrid electric vehicles - a marked improvement from the 2019 baseline year, when the fleet included two petrol and four diesel vehicles.
Sustainable Sourcing and Packaging
Kimm & Miller continuously innovates its packaging to reduce material usage, improve recyclability, and support responsible sourcing. The company is committed to eliminating plastic fastenings, minimising PET vac forms, and using recycled board wherever possible. End-of-life packaging data is recorded through the WASTEPACK provider.
Since onboarding in 2010, the company has achieved an 82.52% reduction in total plastic usage, with an average annual decline of 9.25%. Kimm & Miller is also working towards full adoption of FSC-certified paper and board across all product ranges. This transition requires collaboration with both suppliers and customers and supports the use of responsibly managed forests.
Goods are sourced from accredited factories, with a growing emphasis on traceability across the supply chain - most recently aligning with EUDR regulations for in-scope food items.
Conclusion
Kimm & Miller recognises that its sustainability journey is ongoing and multifaceted. Reducing emissions and improving environmental performance requires active engagement across the full supply chain. With support from the Smart Carbon platform, the company continues to identify key areas of impact and set realistic, data-led reduction targets.
Kimm & Miller remains committed to transparent reporting, continuous improvement, and collaborative action in the pursuit of a more sustainable and resilient future.
